A calming medition for children

This is something I use with my eldest son. He has probably ADHD and a developmental delay and as such sometimes finds the world daunting and hard to cope with, which leads to some... shall we say 'wild' behaviour.
After attending baby massage with my youngest son the group leader suggested some modified routines for my older son based on touch. She gave me a few routines to work from and soon I found it to be better to work on the spot and change my story each time. Here is an example:
Have your child stand infront of you with their back facing you. Turn off everything and anything creating noise and distraction where possible. Some children may close their eyes, others may not want to- let your child decide.
Place each of your palms flat upon your child's shoulder blades. Speak in a low even voice or whisper:
"It is a beautiful clear day,"
(Smooth palms across back)
"and the sun is out."
(use palms to make a circular sunshine movement across back)
"Over the hills clouds start to appear"
(small circular motions with fingertips)
"And the wind starts to sing"
(back and forth motions across the width of child's back)
"You look up to the skies and spots of rain begin to fall on your face"
(make gentle tapping motions with fingertips across back)
"The rain soon begins to fall heavily to the ground"
(make trickling movements with fingers from shoulder blades down to the small of the back)
"There is so much rain that it makes a lake"
(wide circular movements across whole back)
"The lake becomes a river"
(snaking movement from base of spine up to the shoulder blades)
"that runs down to the sea."
(use finger tips to make wave movements)
"The sea rocks you from side to side"
(either move palms from side to side or gently rock child from side to side)
"you feel peaceful and calm and alive."

I change this each time I do it. Sometimes we have rainbows, sometimes we have lightening, but I always end on a peaceful note. Sometimes the story is about trees or fairies or swimming under the sea. I find it to be a very useful tool to help my son reign in his energy and ground himself. He focuses on the touch and also on the whispered words and it is also something he may even ask me to do for him unprompted from time to time.

  1. This is beautiful! I love the combination of physical touch with a story! That's a wonderful thing... and certainly very soothing.

Have you heard of emotional freedom technique (EFT)? It's a tapping method that uses points on acupuncture meridians to help center and ground people. It's great for kids because after a short while they can do it themselves. Just a thought of another physical technique for... well... any kid really... any person...
